Autocomplete creating new opportunities for Search Engine Marketers?

by admin

Could Google’s auto-complete functionality be creating new opportunities for opportunistic SEOs and PPC marketers?  Maybe.

I recently checked the data for a client’s analytic account and to my surprise, partial keywords accounted for 4 of the top 10 keywords.  These 4 partial keywords accounted for right at 5% of the total traffic from Google.  That’s just the 4 partial keywords that land in the top 10!  I wonder what the total percentage would be if I took the time to check each of the 878 unique keywords that drove traffic to the site from Google?  If I had to guess I’d say around 7% or so.

The cause of this, I speculate, is that a great number of people see the autocomplete phrases under what they are typing in at Google and press the Enter key mistakenly thinking that Google will automatically fill in the rest of the search term they are typing.

The biggest opportunities I think may lie in pay per click marketing whereby marketers could bid on those partial keywords.  The costs for those partial keywords could be much, much lower than the actual keyword itself.

I think I’ll experiment with this on Google AdWords and see if it leads to generating traffic at a much lower cost than typical.  When I do I’ll report back, so stay tuned.

Interesting. I’m definitely interested in seeing what results you get from your experiment.
